To effectively trim your dog’s nails, make sure your pup is calm and still. It may help to have someone with you if your pup is nervous or has never had their claws trimmed before. Hold on to the dog's toe firmly to keep it still, then open the clippers by pulling the safety clip downwards. The scissors come with a guard that can be used to measure how much nail to cut. Place the clipper over the end of the claw and close it to remove the end of the claw. However, it is important to only remove the very end of the claw, as cutting too much of the claw can cut the quick (a vein that runs through the claw) and cause your pup pain. For dogs with dark claws, it can be difficult to see the quick, so try looking from underneath the claw. If you are cutting long claws, proceed with caution and cut only the very end of the claw off. To avoid cutting the quick, long claws should be trimmed by small amounts to help the quick recede.
